Cancer Genetics/Genomics Workgroup
Mission: Increase the availability of and access to cancer genetic counseling and testing in Pennsylvania.
Workgroup Membership:
This workgroup comprises organizations and individuals committed to increasing awareness among health care professionals and the public on the importance of genetic testing and using genetics to drive precision medicine.
Focus:
The workgroup addresses public health promotion and disease prevention by utilizing recent and emerging knowledge in the field of Cancer Genetics/Genomics. The workgroup focuses on:
- Data collection and surveillance to monitor the burden of hereditary cancers.
- Education of the population and providers regarding genetic predisposition to cancer, genetic counseling, appropriate testing, screening and other risk management services.
- Promotion of policy and systemic change to advance Cancer Genetics/Genomics in Pennsylvania to save lives and improve the health and quality of life of Pennsylvanians.
Resources:
The Genetics/Genomics workgroup of the Pennsylvania Cancer Coalition (PCC) has worked with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to increase the availability of and access to cancer genetic counseling and testing.
- The workgroup designed the Pennsylvania Cancer Control Genetics/Genomics Healthcare Provider Toolkit to provide health care professionals with tools and resources to assist them in effectively integrating hereditary cancer risk assessment into practice.
- The workgroup also developed the Pennsylvania Cancer Control Patient & Family-Centered Genetics/Genomics Toolkit to provide individuals and family members with information and resources to increase their understanding of hereditary cancers and hereditary risk factors, genetic counseling and testing, and when to talk to their doctor or provider about if they or someone in your family should consider genetic counseling.
