Colorectal Cancer Workgroup
The goal of the Colorectal Cancer (CRC) workgroup is to increase colorectal cancer screenings in the state. In Pennsylvania, there are approximately 6,900 cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed each year and approximately 2,600 associated deaths.
A study in the February 28, 2018 edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found new cases of colon cancer and rectal cancer occurring at an increasing rate among young and middle-aged adults in the U.S. One in 10 are diagnosed before age 50 years, and state statistics mirror national trends.
The CRC workgroup is committed to multicomponent strategies that:
- Increase health professionals’ knowledge by disseminating information on current recommendations and best practices.
- Maintain hospital/health system partnerships to increase screening rates, especially in hardest-to-reach areas.
- Help Pennsylvania residents reach 80% for CRC screening.
- Increase workgroup membership/representation.
